Close Reading/Looking Essay
Homework: 15 points

Choose one passage and write a close reading/looking essay:

  • pgs. 156-157
  • pg. 168
  • pgs. 174-175

This essay is modeled after the “What? So, What?” essay. Your essay must include detailed textual examples from the book and carefully thought-out and explained visual and narrative analysis.

Your essay should have these parts:

  1. Introduction: This is a brief paragraph where you identify a theme that is present in the passage you will be analyzing. This theme should be described and how it applies to the passage and to the book as a whole.
  2. First Example Paragraph: This paragraph must contain a brief, “What?” and then a much longer “So, What?” analysis about a part of the passage that is important to your theme.
  3. Second Example Paragraph: same as the first example paragraph, just another example from the passage you are analyzing.
  4. Conclusion: Wrap up your analysis essay with a brief paragraph addressing the theme and how the 2 example paragraphs add to your understanding of that theme.
