English 10: Literary Journeys

Found Poetry

We have been integrating some WWI poetry into our reading of All Quiet on the Western Front. The often shocking and difficult themes in the novel can be visited from the viewpoint of a poem. Paul, our narrator, is a writer and a poet. Before he enlisted in the war, he was a student, much like yourselves. And his writing is often very “writerly” as Caitie mentioned in class. He thinks and describes events and his emotions through this poetic lens. On the last class of the week we learned about found poetry. Some of you had already done this before, but for some it was new.

At first it seemed daunting for some, but afterwards I heard Nicole say, “This was fun.” Poetry can seem hard to begin, but I am glad we had a chance to write our own in class. I loved reading them, hearing them in class, and I hope that you did too.

Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them as poetry by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning. (taken from wikipedia)

I would love to submit these to the literary magazine and think that all of you should be published. Please let me know by email if you do not want me to submit it, but give yourselves a chance. They were all moving and from your particular perspective. Dr. Swift also commented on the poems and loved them as well.

Congrats, Poets!
