English 10: Literary Journeys

Group Annotations!

Annotating while reading is an important skill. It is a conversation you have with the book and the author. It may be a comment, question, reaction, connection to something else in the narrative, or a critical opinion on what you are reading. Annotating is an important step in the process of being an active reader. It can help you remember the text better, inform you in a quick flip through for possible discussions, or give you seeds of a paper topic.

We did a group annotation in class today, a variation of what you do while reading individually. You were having a conversation, albeit a silent and written one, with your peers. This collective thinking is a great way to share information and learn how other people think and perceive.

Remember, think of P.L.A.I.D. while you annotate (Thanks, Ms. D-O for the great idea!)

P| Purpose: Why did the author write this?  What is the purpose for this word, passage, chapter, character, symbol, etc…?

L| Language: How does the language of the text influence the meaning of the text? Why does the author choose to use that word or phrase? How does the meaning or connotation of that word add to the narrative?

A| Audience: Who is the author talking to? Who is the audience for the text or chapter? Why does that perspective matter?

I | Images: What images does the text use? And what does it add? What does that image mean and how does it connect to the rest of the work?

D| Details: What details and descriptions are used in the text? What do you notice about those details and how the author uses them?

Here are the groups’ collective annotations that you collaborated on in class. Take a look at the other section’s annotations too! There is something to be said about collective brain power.
