English 10: Literary Journeys

Signpost Questions

signpost-questions-smallWe learned in class today about different kinds of analysis questions, signpost questions. This is a list of questions developed by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst from their book, Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading. These categories of questions can be very helpful when generating your own questions while you read.

My favorite category is Words of the Wiser. In Persepolis, Marji talks to her grandmother often about her life, the politics of the day, her dreams, and what she should do in a difficult situation. Marji’s grandmother always seems to have a witty, cunning, and spunky way of giving Marji advice and I often question what she says. What did Marji’s grandmother mean when she says all we have is our integrity?

When you are reading your homework and annotating, keep in mind these questions. Ask them, write them down, think about these different ways of looking and reading Persepolis.  I will ask you to practice using these question in your reading homework so look out for it! And for those of you who would like to challenge yourselves, this is the place to do it. Practice those close reading skills and become a more fluent reader!
